The Artist’s Toolkit: Top Online Resources for Human Body and Face Reference Images

Today’s post will be less text-heavy, and more link-focused – I want to share all the awesome links I have with reference images for artists.

Most of these I have used myself – or have saved for future use.

If you are planning to use the references to create something for sale, please, check if it is allowed/available in each particular case.

Let’s dive in!

  1. Timed References
  2. Pose Stocks
  3. Royalty-Free Images
  4. Portraits At Different Angles

Timed References

https://line-of-action.com/

https://quickposes.com/en

These two are great for timed practice, the sites have built-in timers, you just select the types of references you want, the time – and draw.

Pose Stocks

Amazing collections of reference images with different poses can be found on DeviantArt and on Pinterest – they are often free to use even for commercial purposes, but do check each one separately to make sure.

https://www.deviantart.com/adorkastock or search for Adorka Stock on Pinterest.

Pose Archives on Pinterest https://www.deviantart.com/theposearchives

Jookpub Stock on Pinterest https://jookpubstock.com/

https://www.deviantart.com/lalunatique/gallery or search for LaLunatique on Pinterest

Pyjama Cake on Pinterest

These two websites have lots of photographs of people in different poses as reference images. You have to pay for full-resolution ones, but I’ve worked with the smaller images and it was fine. Not sure about commercial use, but personal use and drawing practice should be fine.

Royalty-Free Images

I already collected lots of resources with royalty-free images before on Medium – I hope you don’t mind me sharing a link to my own post with the selection.

Portraits At Different Angles

http://referenceangle.com/

This website looks for photographs of people that match the head angle you select. It doesn’t always work perfectly but can be very helpful.

Other

This site features digital models of humans without skin in different poses that can be rotated to be viewed at different angles. It seems a bit weird but can be a useful extra resource, especially if you want to focus on the anatomy and all the muscles.

Final Thoughts

I hope some of these resources will come in handy!

Which ones do you use? Share in the comments.
